The 2022 KCCI Community Catalyst’s project is an opportunity to bring together all ages of residents, students, artists and organizations to incorporate a blend of unexpected surprises along the trail and create a place where a love for reading can be celebrated as a community. Fundraising for Phase II, the iconic art element, is ongoing. Phase I of the project, which is now fully funded, includes the Wander & Wonder story trail at all three parks, complimented by the book benches and hammock garden at Pedrick Pond Park. The opening and closing panels will drive readers to the nearby library and encourage them to visit the library web site and other Leon County resources. The exhibit will present different narratives through interchangeable “book” page panels. Wander & Wonder is an artistic, multifaceted installation placed along the ADA accessible trails. All three parks are near Leon County Public Library branches. Thanks to the support of the Friends of the Leon County Public Library, the Wander & Wonder story trail will be placed at Pedrick Pond Park, Woodville, and Fort Braden August 2022. The Fully Booked project concept at Pedrick Pond Park was unanimously approved by the Leon County Commission at the Tuesday, March 8, 2022, meeting. If funding is secured, an iconic piece of art will serve as a photo backdrop for programming, book clubs, and field trips while also drawing people into the park from the road. In addition, book themed benches and a hammock garden provide places to pause and spots to enjoy the park and check out hammocks from Leon County’s new “Library of Things” program. The team’s Fully Booked placemaking project concept includes Wander & Wonder story trail where people read a “book” on artistic signs as they walk around the park.

The project will inspire literacy through art and create a place that promotes community physical and mental health in addition to being a place where a love for reading is celebrated. The park’s nearly one-mile trail is adjacent to the Leon County Eastside Branch library, making it a perfect spot to explore.

The Fully Booked placemaking project will create literary-inspired artistic features along the trail at Pedrick Pond Park, a Leon County park. Tallahassee is the most educated city in Florida, but work must continue to ensure that the joy of reading reaches all corners of our community. KCCI’s 2022 Catalyst Class is creating a greater love for literacy at three of Tallahassee’s most beautiful parks.
